#EdChat Hashtag — A Special Place on the Internet

Filed in #edchat,All,Education, February 23, 2010, 1:48 am by Oliver W. Lancaster

If you are in education, love technology, and want to advance the experience and options for student learning, the #edchat hashtag is for you. Ardent educators come together every Tuesday from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (EST) to discuss topics voted on the day before. This is arguably the best place on the internet to feel the pulse of the education industry and understand its major obstacles, perspectives, and insight. Luckily, the OpenStudy team also gains our daily perspective from CSO Ashwin Ram who teaches at Georgia Tech. Because we are a technology startup, our value is greater during the first session which usually revolves around technology.

Be prepared because the #Edchat stream is fast! Hundreds of tweets a minute make it difficult to keep up with real time. That’s why we’ve taken the liberty to create a visual list of the top 20 tweets during the first session. Last week’s #Edchat was fantastic so it had to be covered. We’ll be there tomorrow, will you?

Topic: How do we best build community in classrooms using edtech? How do we define community?

(20 Tweets)

To join in on the fun, set your search to #edchat and follow the community chat. If you’d like to add your input, just make sure to include #edchat into your tweet and you will have a chance to be one of the top twenty tweets of the hour!

Very nicely done! May I ask…how did your capture the tweets in that way? Love the way it just brings them to life. So much more appealing-would love to post in such a way on my blog as well! BTW…I will be there tomorrow! Thanks!

Thanks for the comment Lisa. I use the twitter client Tweetie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweetie) and take screen shots of each tweet. Tweetie is only compatible with Macs though. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I’ll see you tomorrow at #Edchat!

Great idea! It’s wonderful to get different people’s perpective on edchat and the discussions it’s really hard to follow every thread.
    These tweets are beautifully presented!
I guess I now have a reputation to preserve!!
    See you at edchat later!

Very interesting concept. May I ask how you determine the top “best” tweets? For me, and probably many others, #edchat can’t be defined by a single tweet — It’s about the collaboration of the many tweets.

That said, the way you’ve presented these tweets may get others who don’t partake in #edchat to get an easy glimpse of the type of content created (Rather than them looking at the very long archive or a blog).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts,
    Elana

    Elana,

Thanks for the comment. Yes, we have a review process in which our team studies the #edchat topic and thread. From there we take the top tweets that best exemplify the flow, concept, and conclusion of the chat. We normally only focus on the 12:00 session because it deals with ed tech.

Our intent is not to exclude any tweets; however we do want to provide a resource for teachers, parents, and students to experience the pulse of online innovation and collaboration. I hope this answers your question and let me know if you have any more.

    Best,
    Oliver

P.s. Btw, we are big Edutopio fans!

I am a 70 plus great grandmother who never imagined that I would be typing my thouhts rather than speaking my mind. Although I know that I am still relevant however I do feel left out. I don’t know how to text, skype (sp) twitter, blog or any of those other terms that are being used today. I would love to learn how to blog because I do have a lot to say..oops did I say something to say even though I am not talking about the spoken word. Oh well what’s new?

I find it absolutely fascinating the way echnology has changed the world. And just think
I was excited when I no longer had to use a telephone with a “party” line. The sharing of information and ideas ultimately leads to the solution of many of the challenges that we are confronted with today. I am excited!

Getting older can be a lonely affair but its necessary if you consider the alternative. So I must learn how to communicate without smiling or having the reciepent hear my voice but at the same time share my thoughts and my feelings. WHO WILL TEACH ME HOW TO BLOG? If not you then WHO?
