5 Things Every Student Should Know When Learning Online

Filed in All, February 15, 2012, 8:26 pm by Owlfred

First of all, the Internet is an open community. This is a positive thing – however, everyone does need to remember this as they learn and interact online.  We believe in bringing students and learners together from around the world, from all walks of life – together in a safe, open community in order to learn.

To make any online learning experience positive,  we at OpenStudy want to share 5 Things Every Student Should Know When Learning Online.

1. Do NOT Give Out Personal Information
We know that we like to communicate, and share with other people – especially those we feel close to. However, everyone needs to remember that who someone says they are on the Internet is not necessarily the truth. Caution is key here, and there a couple of items you should NEVER reveal your address or contact information.  Since OpenStudy is where you build your academic profile, you should add your school name in your user profile. This will enable the helper tailor his or her assistance to your level.

2. Treat yourself and others with respect
It’s nice to go online and be someone else. The Internet gives you an opportunity to create a whole new persona, without any of the constraints of the ‘real world.’ But remember, respect is key online – same as in real-life. A good rule of thumb is to always act in a way you’re proud of – if you say or do something online you wouldn’t want your friends or family to know about – then don’t do it.

3. Mentoring and support on OpenStudy

OpenStudy has many people from all ages and stages of life, and expertise.  Many are willing to be mentors and guides.  We encourage you to explore OpenStudy’s online mentors.  They can make the difference between success and failure when it comes to supporting you through your learning journey.Of course you will get diverse advice from diverse people.  Keep that in mind and be open in seeking advice, but cautious in following it.  Validate it.

4. Be Nice
This cannot be overstated – especially in a learning environment. Everyone is there to learn, and the only way to allow that to happen is by making a safe, friendly, open environment. Mistakes should be encouraged as part of the learning process – if we all knew the answers, why would we need to learn?

5. Be Helpful
Studies have shown that the best way to learn something is to teach it – and it can be a great boost to your self-esteem. Struggling with geometry but are great in algebra? Find someone who would love your help – oftentimes you may be the best person to teach someone when you’re not too far removed from learning it yourself. Remember, we all have something to give and take away from the learning experience – don’t shortchange yourself on half of the fun!

OpenStudy is a safe, moderated, online community – but it is an open online community! Take advantage of OpenStudy, but your safety comes first.  Follow these simple rules, and you too will enjoy an amazing learning adventure with people around the world. Happy Learning Everyone!

Your Friendly Owl,

Owlfred
